| A MOMENT IN TIME AT THE STAGECOACH COMMUNITY THEATRE |
| THE FIRST PRODUCTION OF THE STAGECOACH COMMUNITY THEATRE WAS: THE MUSICAL OKLAHOMA ! THE PLAY WAS PERFORMED: At 8:00 pm on Friday night, June 6th, 1975, at the new 1000 seat Perry High School Auditorium THE DIRECTOR WAS: Steve Smallwood, Perry High School Drama Teacher Piano Accompaniment was by: Bernice Schieffer Percussion & Saxophone: Miss Adrian Bear OPENING NIGHT AUDIENCE: 745 souls CAST, CREW & HELPERS: Over 100 people ORIGINAL PLAYBILL: (we're looking for a copy of it) MOTHER NATURE MAKES A SURPRISE APPEARANCE ...A SHOW STOPPER FOR SURE ! "On our very first opening night, about 45 minutes into the show, the tornado sirens went off, the doors of the theater blew open, and lighting operator Gary Hampton dashed to the lobby to close them. Marge Martin went after him to see what was happening -- the wind and rain was blowing in, the storm was intensifying and the audience and the cast were getting a bit worried --then suddenly the power went out momentarily... it came back on, then shortly went out again. And on again. And off again. Melinda Corporon was singing "I'm Just A Girl Who Can't Say No" and the roof started leaking onto the stage and in the wings -- the actors put paper cups out everywhere to catch the raindrops -- (troopers all, they knew how to deal with an early summer thunderstorm in Oklahoma!) A few in the audience left, but most stayed. Then, the power went out completely. Another siren sounded. Several flashlights and lanterns came on in the house, and someone from Civil Defense sent word that no tornado had touched down. Then Bernice (piano) and Adrian took the reins and led the cast in a rousing reprise of "Oklahoma" -- by flashlight the audience and cast sang song after song. By about 10:30 p.m. the storm had passed, and relieved Perryans headed home. The next night we staged the full production, and added a free Sunday matinee to make up for the opening night cancellation -- and all went beautifully. Each performance when we got past "I Can't Say No", we knew we had it made: Stagecoach was on its way!" (This story was derived from a letter by Marge & Charles Martin describing the event) |
